QUATRE INVITATIONS AU VOYAGE Although it's name recalls the much coveted city of the Middle Ages, Constantinople, like the city of Montreal in which it is based, is a crossroads for cultural encounters and a plural entity decidedly set in the 21st century. Our ensemble drifts freely between ancient and newer world music aesthetics to create a truly contemporary sound. For our sixth annual season of great concerts, we invite you to join us for four unique journeys into the heart of the rich musical traditions of Afghanistan, Iran, Andalusia and the shores of the Mediterranean in the company of prestigious Guests. All departures will be from Salle Pierre-Mercure in the Centre Pierre-Péladeau venue in Montreal, a space of wonderful acoustic quality. Join the journey!

Following the recent discovery of ancient manuscripts found in the Ottoman Empire, Iranian music of the 16th Century is no longer a hidden treasure. In company of Hossein Omoumi, one of Iran's most renowned musicians, Constantinople enters the great palaces of Isfahan to discover all of the splendor and refinement of Ancient Persia. In addition to this unique evening, Shiraz, Vivier's masterpiece will be presented in new arrangement for the Constantinople soloists and piano solo.

A great theme calls for a great evening with these Songs of Love and Women, both profane and mystical, from the shores of the Mediterranean. This new work is the fruit of our on-going collaboration with the Franco-Moroccan singer Françoise Atlan with whom Constantinople performed on the major early and world music stages of Europe.

As a final touch to this sixth season, Constantinople will cross paths with the Romani people and their gipsy and flamenco music. All the warmth and fever of Spain with guests from Sevilla: singer Rosario LA TREMENDITA, one of the most important figures of the new generation of flamenco singers, and her guitarist Jose-Luis Rodriguez who has worked with Spain's greatest, such as Carmen Linares and Cristina Hoyos

2006-2007 SEASON
In conjunction with the Persian New Year, for three nights only, the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th of March 2007, Constantinople will take up the stage of Théâtre La Chapelle for their new concert: CRI PERSAN. Halfway between composition and improvisation, the three soloists of Constantinople explore with this concert, the rich universe of Persian music in a new and creative approach. This concert is coloured with their encounters and escapades in different musical universes based on the story of a cry, a Persian cry.

Four fragments of a medieval opus become the subject of eight intersecting looks at four new works by Constantinople in an esthetic proper to our ensemble for four new written works by Nicholas Gilbert, Vincent-Olivier Gagnon, Cléo Palacio-Quintin and Evrim Demirel, commissioned for Constantinople. Italy, 14th century : a new musical efflorescence sees the light of day in a melange of monophonic tradition and improvised polyphony native to Italy. Constantinople revisits Italian Ars Nova, characterised by its instrumental and vocal music, its amazing rhythmic vitality and scintillating melodic exuberance.The ensemble welcomes Anne Azema and Shira Kammen to joint Constantinople¨s soloists. Montreal On heels of a successful first season, Constantinople is pleased to announce its upcoming Montréal concert season, which will consist of five productions: three ensemble performances at Salle Pierre-Mercure and two recitals at Théâtre La Chapelle. The season will feature new works in the realms of early music, the scholarly traditions of the Mediterranean, and new music. Constantinople provides a forum for cross-fertilization among various musical cultures, both within the Ensemble itself and with its guest artists. Constantinople endeavours to consolidate the ties among these cultures by cultivating a unique mode of musical expression—a musical vocabulary that has grown out of extensive research into the history and esthetics of the musical traditions into which it delves, combined with freshness and creativity.

In a solo recital, percussionist Ziya Tabassian will retrace his unique musical journey and performance practice. Ziya, a virtuoso of the percussion instruments and rhythmic vocabulary of Iran, creates original works through improvisation and formal composition. In addition to Ziya’s own works, this concert will include compositions by Jérôme Blais, Georges Aperghis, Vinko Globokar and Ziya Tabassian. Multidisciplinary artist Véronique Emond will also participate in this performance. A talk and discussion on compositional techniques for percussion will be held on December 4 at 6 p.m. at and two workshops on Iranian percussion techniques will be held on December 6 from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2 to 4 p.m. at Théâtre La Chapelle. The first part of this concert will feature the musicians of Constantinople, who will present various aspects of improvisation in the scholarly modal traditions of the Mediterranean and Persia (maqam and dastgah). The second part will feature the ensemble Radical 3, which will explore a new vocabulary of improvisation within a contemporary framework, while drawing upon a font of modal traditions. In this new program, Constantinople traces the peregrinations of Spanish music in the New World. This repertoire, which consists of villancicos and motets from Spain and Mexico, revisits a rich period in history (1550–1690) that was replete with discovery and transformation. The program, which juxtaposes sacred and secular, is rooted in the musical forms and vibrant modes of expression that grew out of contact among the peoples of the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Americas. The programme From Castile to Samarkand will capture the imagination of all before the splendour of the places, the odours, the landscapes and the peoples of the Silk Route. This new production will feature an account of the Spanish voyager Clavijo, who set out to reach the empire of the great Mongol ruler Tamerlane in the early 15th century. In this unique program, Constantinople will take an original look at the music of Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Armenia, Persia and Central Asia of the 15th and 16th centuries, based on ClavijoŽs travel log and some musical sources of that period. In this program, Constantinople will present songs dedicated to the Virgin Mary from the Cantigas de Santa Maria-a substantial 12th-century manuscript that is quintessentially one of the richest musical phenomena of the Middle Ages. The Cantigas reflect the Byzantine, Arabic, Persian and Jewish influences that were present at the Medieval Spanish court of Alfonso el Sabio (Alfonso the Wise). This program is devoted to Jewish (Sephardic) and Arabic (Moorish) music of Medieval Spain, celebrating the harmonious coexistence between two peoples and cultures during that periode. Constantinople will be joined for this concert by one of the world’s foremost specialists of this repertoire, Françoise Atlan, in her Canadian premiere.
