CONSTANTINOPLE
As intense as a gypsy's cry or the silence of a starry night, this concert will take you on an enchanting trip into the heart of Andalusia and the rich musical traditions that have developed in these sun-drenched Spanish lands. This new production of El grito, El silencio, which premiered in Montreal in May 2008, will feature contemporary interpretations of ancient and traditional flamenco ballads, as well as new compositions bearing the mix of influences that Constantinople is known for. Two remarkable guests from Seville, the young and impassioned singer Rosario La Tremendita, and master guitarist Juan Requena, will join the ensemble in this flamenco adventure.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 8 p.m. Salle Pierre-Mercure Baroque music, Mexico and the singular destiny of Latin America's first major poet, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz (1648-1695), are closely interwoven in this new and exciting work. With new readings and improvisations, both instrumental and vocal, based on the famous diferencias by 17th century Mexican composers Ribayaz and Murcia, this concert will feature intense dialogues between the baroque guitar, Persian setar, voice, viola da gamba and percussion. An ideal opportunity to discover the passionate poems of one of the greatest figures of Hispanic literature, which Constantinople and its guests will set to music.
CONSTANTINOPLE Created at Banff Center for the Arts, and on tour at Early Music Society of the Islands, Victoria ( March 19), and at Early Music Vancouver (March 20).
Following the Sephardic music, the Corsican polyphonies, the flamenco and songs of Anatolia, it is now the treasures of Klezmer music that Constantinople will help to reveal! Accompanied by two leading figures of new Klezmer music - the co-founders of the New York group Klezmatics, Frank London and Lorin Sklamberg - Constantinople will set the stage for a dynamic encounter between the Klezmer and Persian musical traditions. A rare opportunity to hear songs sung in Yiddish and Persian, intermingled with the explosive improvisations of the entire cast of musicians on stage.
